GOD SAW THAT IT WAS GOOD - new film series
The “God Saw That It Is God” films entwine scientific and Christian narratives with stunning imagery, enabling a fresh appreciation of the wonder, playfulness and communion of the world in which we live, and share with a vast array of life. Looking along coasts and up to the sky; walking among the trees and alongside other life, God’s presence and creativity is to be found.
They are written and presented by the Revd Dr Dave Gregory, a Baptist minister and former meteorologist and climate scientist at the Met Office and European Weather Centre.
He says, 'In our visual age, people are captivated by stunning images of our world and cosmos seen in nature and science programmes streamed to our TVs and phones. They are entranced by the wonder they see, yet often left with a sense of mystery and asking is there more to know?
‘The God Saw That It Was Good films take people deeper in the wonder and mystery of the world. They enable viewers to encounter the wonder, playfulness, and connections in creation that science reveals, and through which God may be encountered.'
PRAYER COURSE
Sunday evenings, Parish Hall, January - March 2024
‘The disciples said: “Lord teach us to pray!”’
Every pilgrim gets a stone in their shoe eventually. You wake up one morning thinking, ‘Is this really all there is to knowing the Creator of 100 billion galaxies?’ You read the book of Acts and ask, ‘Why isn’t it like that any more?’ Your world falls apart and you desperately need a miracle. You stare up at the stars and feel things bigger than religious language. You say to yourself, ‘If this thing is true there’s got to be more power, more mystery, more actual personal experience.’ And so, finally, you turn to God, half wondering whether you’re any more than half-serious and say, ‘Lord teach us to pray.’ And he replies, ‘I thought you’d never ask!’ (Extract from ‘how to pray a simple guide for normal people’ by Pete Greig, published Hodder & Stoughton 2019)
THE PRAYER COURSE – 24-7 Prayer International
We will be running this 8 week course at the Parish Hall on Sunday evenings between January 21st and March 24th (not February 11th or March 10th as Messy Church) from 7.00pm to 8.15pm.
The course will include prayer times, a 20 minute video and small group discussion/reflection. The course is an 8 week journey through ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ and includes sessions on praying for others, listening to God, unanswered prayer and more.
Speak to Peter Fowler or Martin Cronin for more details.
CAROLS ROUND THE BONFIRE 2023
On the 9th December we gathered in the darkness to light a bonfire and sing carols about the Light of the World. There were shepherds, wise men, angels, and even a donkey!
Climbing the Mountain of Romans
Over the Autumn and into the Winter we will be looking at two books in the Bible for our Sunday morning talks – the book of Psalms from the Old Testament and the book of Romans from the New.
Romans has been described as “the high peak of scripture”, with “all roads in the Bible leading to Romans”. The riches it contains are almost inexhaustible. Martin Lloyd-Jones, the famous Welsh preacher, took 13 years to preach through the book Romans! We will take a little less but I hope enough to give us an overview of this amazing book and whet our appetites to plumb its depths in greater detail in our own time.

Romans: A Letter that makes sense of life by Andrew Ollerton. Follow the Apostle Paul's footsteps all the way to the summit. Journalling the Psalms by Dr Paula Gooder, Canon Chancellor at St Paul’s Cathedral and a writer and lecturer in Biblical Studies. The Psalms contain some of the most beautiful lines in Scripture: lines that inspire and comfort us when we need them most and draw us into a life of prayer and praise. The Psalms remind us of community, of the people around us, known or unknown to us, and all that their lives hold. They also call us to worship and pray together.
FILTHY RICH: How the property crash saved my life by Manoj Riathatha. Manoj Raithatha appeared to have it all: a booming property company, a picture-book family and the power to shape his destiny. Then his professional and personal worlds were shattered. The 2008 financial crisis devastated his business and a sudden illness threatened his son's life. With his hollow foundations exposed, Manoj found himself utterly dependent on the prayers of others and the help of a previously unknown God. Morally bankrupted by greed and selfishness, Manoj would have to build his life and marriage anew with different foundations. With profound reflections on race, identity and meaning, Filthy Rich addresses some of the burning issues of our day.
TEN: Laws of Love Set in Stone by J John. TEN rediscovers the Bible's perfect design for our relationship with God and others. Author J. John shares how readers can reclaim God's absolute truths while living in a subjective culture. We explored the Ten Commandments in our preaching series Winter/Spring 2023. Listen to those talks HERE.
God on Mute: Engaging the Silence of Unanswered Prayer by Pete Greig. Originally written out of the pain of his wife's fight for her life, but also the wonder of watching the prayer movement they founded changing lives around the world, Pete Greig steps into the dark side of prayer and emerges with a hard-won message of hope, comfort, and profound biblical insight for all who suffer in silence.
